The 40th wedding anniversary is considered the second major anniversary, after the 25th wedding anniversary. Forty years of marriage is certainly an achievement, and one that deserves to be celebrated. For your 40th anniversary, what better to celebrate than with a nice gift.
40th wedding anniversaries are called ruby weddings, possibly because ruby is the gemstone linked with them. This tends to mean that everything about 40th wedding anniversaries, from the cards to the flowers to the colour schemes of the parties, are red. If you’re looking for a gift for the male half of the couple celebrating their ruby wedding, buying something red would be an easy answer.
There are plenty of red clothes out there – ties, jumpers, shirts, even red trousers. You could buy a pair of red underwear or some red socks, but it’s probably best to stay away from that unless you’re good friends with the couple. But remember, if you’re buying to celebrate a 40th wedding the gentleman will be in his 50’s, 60’s or 70’s and may not appreciate bright red clothes, no matter how fashionable they are – stay away from scarlet, aim for maroon.
If you’re not comfortable enough to buy clothes but want to stick with the red theme, there is a plethora of red items available to you. A quick search online reveals ruby wedding champagne flutes, mugs, photo frames/albums, clocks, candles, statuettes, anything. If you can think of it, they’ve probably made it with a ruby wedding theme.
One of the more interesting ruby wedding themed gifts is a commemorative newspaper album, which would act as a reminder of their first year together. If you wanted something personal, the song or album that was number one in the charts the week they got married would be a lovely gift. If you wanted something a bit classier, a pair of ruby cufflinks or a ruby tie pin. Buying a bottle of red wine is a way of sticking to the theme whilst still being urbane.
Of course, you might not want to go with the red theme at all, what matters to most people above all is family, a simple family meal, surprise party with all the family or a weekend away with all the family will probably mean more than any gift you can buy.
But a word to the wise – whilst something referencing a ball and chain, life sentence or bossy, nagging wife may amuse the husband, it almost certainly won’t amuse the wife. Play it safe and save the joke gifts for another time.
When buying gifts for a man to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary, as long as you get something that isn’t completely hideous it’s hard to go wrong. A nice, tasteful gift that won’t provoke the ire of his wife or cause embarrassment to his children is just fine.
