Officials with the Knoxville Police Department said the officer injured during a shooting at Austin-East High School Monday is recovering following surgery. KPD announced the officer is “in good spirits and doing well after surgery.”
According to KPD, Officer Adam Willson is a 20-year veteran of the police department. Willson was currently serving as the School Resource Officer at Austin-East. An armed Austin-East student fired shots at Officer Willson. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, TBI reported.
Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon said Willson is in “good spirits” and said he’d “rather this happen to him than someone else.”
Willson was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with a leg injury. Officials said Willson underwent surgery and is now recovering.
“We are grateful for the good wishes,” KPD said in a statement.
Willson is a U.S. Army Veteran who served from 1992 to 1996 in the 82nd Airborne Division.

The shootings occurred at about 3:15 p.m. Monday after police responded to a call that an armed student was holed up in a school bathroom. When officers entered the bathroom, the student fired at them, striking one officer, and was hit and killed by return fire from police, said David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Several videos posted on Facebook appear to show the inside of the Knoxville high school where a shooting was reported on April 12, 2021, and a second video appears to show police taking a younger male into custody after the school shooting, but it later turned out he was just a witness who didn’t do anything wrong.
Authorities now say the gunman, a student, is the only person dead and that they took someone else into custody but are now describing him as a witness.
The student was identified as the suspect who was fatally shot after wounding the cop in Tennessee. Investigators did not immediately say whether the injured officer was the one who shot the suspect, who died on the scene.
