Chelsea boots are close fitting, ankle high boots that can be worn by both men and women. They have elasticated sides which assists in putting them on as well as pulling them off. They originated and were popular during the Victorian era. Initially, they were used for horse riding and went by many names including Jodhpur or paddock boots. During the 1960s, they were made popular as a fashion statement and were worn by men and women alike. You can find a heavier version of these boots manufactured by Blundstone of Australia and these are very popular as Australian work boots.
Chelsea boots usually have low heels and look especially good with pant suits worn either for work or pleasure. They give a polished look to the outfit and also add a touch of sophistication. You can wear them with or without socks and this makes them very versatile. For those of us who are in a rush in the mornings to get ready and can’t find that pair of matching socks, these boots provide the answer. Since Chelsea boots come up to the ankle, all evidence of badly matched socks are hidden from view! You could even wear bright orange socks and no one would be the wiser!
Chelsea boots can be found in leather, synthetic materials, suede and even hardy fabric material. These boots are perfect for colder weather or when the rainy season is upon us. You won’t have to worry about not getting your feet wet or arriving at work or a business meeting with soaking wet shoes and feet. A point to keep in mind though, is not to wear suede boots during wet weather. If you do have suede shoes or boots, remember to waterproof them with a good spray after purchase. However, if your suede boots have become wet in a sudden downpour, immediately soak up the water with a sponge or cloth when you get home. Sponge off the water from the outside but do not rub the suede. Stuff some newspaper or paper towel on the inside’s to help keep the shape and to soak up any remaining moisture. Leave them that way overnight and gently raise the nap by using a soft suede brush or a terry cloth towel.
If you intend to wear your boots during colder weather and you will be wearing socks, make sure you bring your socks with you when you try them on at the store. You want to be comfortable walking in these shoes and don’t be tempted to buy a pair that is too small hoping they will get bigger with wear. There should be a little room from the top of your toe (with socks on) to the front of the boot. If your feet should swell from too much standing or as the day progresses, you would still be comfortable wearing them.
Although Chelsea boots come in a variety of colors, the ones that come in black and shades of brown are typically the best sellers. These colors team well with pant suits of various colors without having to worry about finding the right shade to match the color of your suit. Even pin-striped suits look fantastic paired with Chelsea boots, giving it a very professional and chic look. You could even pair them with jeans and a shirt and this combination would give you a very smart casual look. Formal or casual, Chelsea boots are the answer!
