Cleaning Tips – Removing Coffee Stains

It happens to everyone – I’m talking about coffee stains and spills. You may be drinking your morning cup of coffee and you accidentally splash it on your shirt, or drinking an after dinner cup with friends and someone accidentally splashes their coffee onto the carpet or couch.

Coffee contains tannins within it, and these tannins, if left untreated, can set quickly making it even harder to remove the stain.

Therefore, here are the following cleaning tips for removing coffee stains:

1. Act fast. The tannins within coffee can set quickly, so as soon as you see a spill on any surface grab a white cloth and blot up as much coffee as possible.

2. Pre-soak the garment in a tannin stain removal solution. If you spill coffee on your shirt immediately begin pre-soaking it in a solution of 1/2 teaspoon laundry detergent, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 1/4 cup cool water for approximately 30 minutes. Then, wash as normal and the stain should come right out. Make sure not to dry the clothing in the dryer until you know it is stain free.

Hint: If there is cream in your coffee you need to make sure you don’t use hot water on the stain, because otherwise you may set the part of the stain caused by the cream, which is a protein stain.

3. Spray this tannin stain removal solution on upholstery or carpet, and blot with a white cloth. You don’t always have the luxury of spilling your coffee only on washable fabric, so if you spill on a surface where you can’t wash it, like your upholstery or carpet, instead apply the solution in a spray bottle and blot to remove additional coffee from the area. Once the stain is removed rinse with water, to get rid of the cleaning solution, and dry thoroughly.

4. Use baking soda to clean your coffee mug. For coffee stains inside your coffee mug make a paste of baking soda and water, and gently rub the paste onto the stains. The gentle abrasive action of the paste will remove those stains and make your mug sparkle again.

Now, sit back and enjoy that cup of coffee without fear of stains!
