Visiting the country of Wales in the island of Great Britain presents you with the opportunity to visit the many interesting attractions that are available in this unique place. It also gives you the chance to stay at the spacious and luxurious Wales holiday cottages and sample the different delectable cuisines available in the place. Here are some popular country pubs located near the different Wales holiday cottages that serve some of the most delicious food in Wales.
The Old Cottage
The Old Cottage is a beautiful and tranquil country pub located in Cherry Orchard Lane in the affluent Cardiff suburb of Lisvane. This pub overlooks Cefn Onn Park and is easily accessible from your Wales holiday cottages. This premium country pub’s exterior presents a pretty picture with whitewashed walls and slate tiled roof while the interiors are decorated in warm tones that create an ambiance of cosy comfort.
The ala carte menu features mezze with humus, fregola, tzatziki, antipasti of dolcellate, Italian meats, marinated vegetables and warm stone-baked flatbreads. Mediterranean influence is evident in the chermoula and fennel crusted squid with rocket, red onion tart with gorgonzola, roasted apple and mustard seed dressing. Traditional pub favourites take centre stage with freshly battered fish and chips with minted mushy peas, salmon and caper fishcakes with poached egg, chive hollandaise and spinach. Other main course dishes on the menu are spit roast maple gammon with brussel sprout and parmesan gratin, braised short rib of beef with Lea & Perrins glaze. Desserts include apple and blackcurrant crumble with vanilla custard or sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. You can choose from a variety of aperitifs, unique cask ales, soft drinks and hot drinks while the wine list includes Mediterranean whites and reds from different parts of the globe. There are special nights at The Old Cottage such as Fabulous Fish Fridays that feature fish dishes with a bottle of white wine at half the price or Steak and Wine Supper Wednesdays with high quality steaks with a bottle of red wine also at half price.
Restaurant at the Waterdine
The Waterdine is located at Llanfair Waterdine on the Shropshire-Welsh border. This is an interesting and pretty white timber-fronted country pub that is popular among locals and visitors of Wales holiday cottages. Vegetables that are served at the pub are guaranteed fresh as they come directly from the Waterdine’s own garden while the other ingredients are locally sourced to ensure freshness and high quality.
For starters, you may dine on breast of squab pigeon on parsley risotto with sweet and sour beetroot sauce or the fillet of Dover sole stuffed with lightly wood smoked salmon on crayfish sauce. Main courses include tenderloin of Berkshire pork wrapped in Parma ham roasted on sage with mustard, mash braised carrots, sliced beans and black pudding sauce; rack of Shropshire lamb with couscous and Provencal vegetables; or roast fillet turbot on leek confit with griolle mushrooms. Desserts can be a choice of chocolate mousse with raspberries and shortbreads, iced apricot parfait, crisp lemon curd tart or trio of black cherry puddings. You can take back some food or dessert with you to your Wales holiday cottages and have a midnight meal.
