I’m glad to see that you are looking for information on working your core. The core is often times the red headed step child of exercise routines. Everybody always concentrates on arms and legs without giving the core a second thought. However, the core is the source of your strength because it is intended to assist the other muscles in their work. When you strengthen your core you strengthen your entire body.
The way to strengthen the core is by doing compound exercises which involve multiple muscle groups and work your body as it was intended to be worked, as one whole unit rather than a bunch of separate pieces.
One of my favorite exercises is the clean and jerk in which you pick a bar bell off the floor and raise it over your head. Your legs are involved in picking it off the floor and then your arms are at work when jerking it to your chest and, finally, your shoulders are involved in raising it over head. But, if you stop to think about it, your core muscles were involved at every step of the process.
When you lifted the weight off the floor you used your legs but you also used your back and your abs contracted to keep your insides where they belong. As you jerked the weight to your chest your back assisted your arms and, again, your abs contracted. When you lifted it over your head your upper back helped your shoulders and your lower back and abs worked together to maintain balance.
Other types of these exercises are squats, dead lifts, lunges, dumb bell snatches and others.
