While most would come to Africa to see wildlife up close, in Namibia, safaris offer a different kind of experience for travelers looking to conquer the edges of the earth. Located in the southern half of Africa, Namibia is home to a unique landscape shaped by a sub-tropical climate and large desert areas. It is also known for being the location of two notable deserts: the Namib and the Kalahari.
The most interesting thing about Namibia’s terrain is the way the arid deserts contrast with the sea coast. There are times that fog comes from the Atlantic Ocean, providing the majority of moisture that comes to the desert. The same winds from the Atlantic that bring the fog are the same ones that shape the terrain, creating the Namib Desert’s towering sand dunes. The sand’s color, a deep, burnt orange, is a signifier for its age.
Visitors to the country can enjoy safaris to the Namib Desert at the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Its vast terrain covers not just the desert, but also the Naukluft Mountains to the east. Due to this wide reach, visitors can experience seeing a wide, array of flora and fauna. Given the desert’s unique qualities, it is definitely home to some unusual sights to behold such as Welwitschia plant, a living fossil.
What some regard as the best thing about Namibia safaris is the way they can watch the landscape’s color change with the time of day. As the sun sets and paints a different color upon orange sands, visitors become privy to a play of light and shadow.
