As with anything else on the internet, scams are hitting bands, venues and record labels at a fast pace. In this article we will discuss some do’s and dont’s to help you avoid being used in a scam.
Yes, it is true. People are claiming to be what they never are. IS it because everyone wants to be someone else or are they out to create fraud? I am not sure. Some ‘Social Media’ started as a joke and now is a huge business, perhaps this is no different or maybe it is a scam. Who is sure? the answer is, you should be.
Some online websites are saying they are music magazines and getting whatever you will give them in exchange for a review or concert tickets or posters etc. Beware, most are scams designed to get FREE Stuff for the owner.
I know of one such website who gets T-shirts, tickets, CD’s and more. They write a review based on their ideas and publish it to the website. Done…end of story. Who did it cost? Simple, the band and the record label, T-shirt company or whatever.
When you submit your CD for review, if the editor is replying him or herself, that should send a red flag that it is a small operation which may or may not be on the up and up. Call them, do they have an office number or a cell phone? Can you talk to atleast three people at the publication? Can they send you a copy of the publication or is it only online. While online if you search: Music Magazine or the like, do they come up in the search? What is their alexas score on the website?
Beware, don’t just throw your tickets, CD’s, T-shirts around…put them in the best hands for a review. Let’s stick together and stop the ‘rip offs’ from ‘ripping off’ the artist and label.
