Deciding what information to put on your web site can be very tricky. Include too much and your site will be so complex that visitors will give up. Include too little and visitors will either be left with more questions than answers or the search engines will rank you so low that visitors won’t find you anyway. For those with a lot to say, one of the most effective solutions is to set up satellite web sites and link them using a link wheel.
Let’s take just one simplified example. A farmer might have set up in business for himself selling his own dairy products, meat and vegetables. Whilst the basic products can easily be listed on his main website, he is so proud of his produce that he wants to tell his customers where the food came from, how it was processed and suggest recipes for making the most of the food. This could lead to a web site packed with information and detract from the central reason for the site, the sale of produce.
The farmer decides to set up three satellite sites covering dairy, meat and vegetables. He then needs to link these sites to his main one so that customers of his main site can find the extra information and visitors to the satellite site will be able to find his main site. This linking can be done in several ways. Using the content or articles, the farmer could set up separate two way links between each satellite and his main site. Whilst this would work to some extent, in order to maximise his presence on the web the farmer should set up a link wheel.
In setting up a link wheel, the farmer links each subsidiary site to the main one as well as one of the others. So, he might post an article on the dairy site about making cheese sauce and how well it goes with cauliflower. He links the article with the dairy products on the main site as well as the cauliflower section of the vegetable site. On the vegetable site there is an article about the best seasonal vegetables to serve with lamb. Again the ingredients are linked back to the main site as well as to the lamb section of the meat website. Finally on the meat website an article about using butter to crisp chicken skins would link to the main site and the dairy site.
With each of the satellite sites linked to one other as well as the main site the search engines see the main site as being an expert in a number of areas and will increase its ranking. With each satellite site being linked to another their individual ranking is enhanced. Visitors are also more likely to move between the sites resulting in greater sales.
Setting up link wheels has to be carefully managed to ensure the circular nature of the linking and the highlighting of the most important services or products. When in doubt consult a back link specialist who will also be able to advise you on the optimum number of sites for your business and link wheel. Once in place, you should see an improvement in visitor numbers to your site and this will lead to increased sales.
