Ulrich has been dubbed the “unofficial voice of China” for her knowledge of the country’s culture and economy. She was one of the first financial advisors to cover China when its stock market first opened its door in 1992, and has spent the past 18 years helping Western investors and institutions understand how to navigate the complex country. Says Ulrich: “There’s one critical theme this year: China’s rebalancing act” away from exports and investments to consumer products and services. Ulrich, who has 12,000 contacts in her BlackBerry and is fluent in Mandarin and English, hosts an annual conference in China to connect Chinese and foreign executives. At the first conference in 1996 there were only 100 attendees, while the most recent drew 2,000 attendees from 35 countries.
