For most people Christmas is a wonderful time of year. It’s a time to gather together with family and friends and celebrate the birth of Christ and experience the spirit of giving. However, if your family has a missionary out serving in one of the many missions around the world then your thoughts are inevitably on him while he is away in the mission field during this time of year.
Although he is undoubtedly busy serving and teaching the people in his mission, thoughts of home and family will cross his mind during this special time of year. The best thing you can do is let him know that his loved ones are thinking about him as well by sending him a Christmas gift or holiday package.
Now comes the big question…what to send him? It can sometimes be difficult to come up with ideas for what to get your missionary because missionaries live by a very regimented set of rules and not all gifts will match with these rules. So make sure that you understand the mission rules before putting too much time, energy and money into the gift you plan on sending.
Missionaries’ love just about anything they receive from home so put together some pictures and letters with their favorite snacks. It’s a good idea to send extra snacks so he can share with his companion. Another, very practical thing that your missionary would appreciate getting is some articles of clothing. This can be as simple as a few socks to replace the ones they’ve worn holes in, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt they can wear during their workout time or even an entire suit (if they need it, of course).
Another thing that would be much appreciated is anything to help with their fitness needs. Missionaries are given 30-minutes each morning to exercise and without proper tools it’s difficult to get in a good workout. Having the right tools, such as a jump rope, some exercise tubing or even a pull-up bar will give your missionary the gift of health and allow him to be more physically fit and therefore, more productive while he serves.
Be creative in coming up with Christmas gifts to send your missionary this year. The most important thing is to just let him know that you’re thinking about him and that he is loved. Pretty much anything from home will be a welcomed delight.
