If you are the parent of a teen, it’s quite possible that you are always looking out for parenting advice for teenagers. After all, it’s a completely different game than it was “back in the day” or even a couple years ago, right? When ‘we” were teens, it was a whole different world, wasn’t it? Our parents told us what to do, how to do it, and when to do it, and we did it. If we didn’t do it exactly like they told us to do it, we knew that the result would be one that was completely unpleasant, and would not soon be forgotten.
Today though, teens are a whole new breed. Their disrespect is unmatched, they don’t listen to a word that we say, they live a life with no rules, and they are simply out of control in general. It’s no wonder so many parents are looking for parenting advice for teens. People are desperate to find a way to take control of their families, and to once again have a good relationship with their teen. The good news is, it can be done, as long as you are willing to put a little bit of effort into it. Let’s take a quick look at how things got as “bad” as they are, for a minute.
The law – Now, I’m not saying that I agree with “spanking” or using the threat of physical violence against your teen to make them listen, but lets face facts for a minute. Back in the “day” even the thought of your dad coming home from work and finding out that you were misbehaving was enough to make you follow the rules, right? These days, teenagers don’t fear anything. They know that you can’t spank them, physically restrain them, or anything like that. If you do, there’s a good chance that they will call the cops. You might be laughing a little bit at that statement, but kids have done it recently. The sad part is that in some cases, the parents were arrested and charged for spanking their child.
Society – The way society is right now has taught our children, most notably our teenagers that it’s OK to act in certain ways. It’s OK for them to drink, smoke, steal, do drugs, and any number of things that we as parents don’t find acceptable. After all, what’s going to happen if they do any of those things?
Relationships – At some point, the relationships that parents had with teens went from that of parent and child to “friends”. The evidence of this is all around us. In a tattoo parlor somewhere RIGHT NOW there is a parent with their 16 year old son or daughter getting matching ink. At some party somewhere, right now there is a parent walking in the front door with a case of beer for all the teenagers, so that they will all think the parent is “cool”.
The sad fact of the matter is, even if you aren’t one of the parents that is parenting badly, your teen is more than likely exposed to those parents, or at the very least exposed to the children of those parents. So, your teen more than likely looks at some of the examples that I’ve given above as acceptable, and to some extent the way things should be. Because of this, responsible parents, like you and I need some good parenting advice for teenagers to put things back on the right track. don’t make the mistake of things are just going to get better on their own. Seek out, find, and follow some solid parenting advice for teenagers to make sure that your teen is on the right track.
