1. Famous brand products
Oh such a hard choice: a plain t-shirt – or a plain t-shirt with tiny guy on a horse stitched to it + $60 extra. Yet still, people choose the latter.
It doesn’t make you any less cool if you don’t wear brand-named clothes, if anything your smarter because you don’t fall into trap of paying a lot extra for the same thing.
So, unless that Ralph Lauren shirt is made of some magically rare bulletproof fabric, keep those $60 in your pocket and try to look for items that are similar, but without the brand name logo on it.
2. You avoid saying “no”
Your friend asks to borrow money real quick. He never pays you back, yet still, you don’t want to be pushy and ask for it.
You keep lending money or buying dinner for friends just because paying is easier than saying “no”. This example may not apply to you but please, man up. You won’t end up like the guy in “Yes Man” if you keep agreeing to everything; you’ll just be taken advantage of once people find out you can’t say “no”.
It’s not easy to turn someone down, but be true to yourself and be conscious of why you do what you do.
3. ATM fees
As if banks don’t sneak in enough random fees already, they charge around $2 or $3 just to take your own money out.
Considering you never seem to find the right ATM when you need it, these can add up really quickly. Instead, try to find a different way of taking cash out.
My personal favorite: buy a pack of gum or something cheap at the nearest pharmacy or gas station and get cash back there.
4. Coffee
I know someone who complains they never have money; meanwhile, they buy a $5 latte at Starbucks every day!
Think about that for a second: imagine if you saved $5 a day for a month, that’s $150 extra you can invest to make even more money!
Make your coffee at home or maybe reconsider, do you REALLY need coffee at all?
5. Insurance
Car insurance, life insurance, home insurance… it’s expensive no matter what insurance you’re talking about.
It goes without saying this takes a big bite out of your budget, so, do a thorough job of shopping around and find the best rates.
6. Food you don’t eat
It’s tough to be frugal when you want to eat just about everything in the grocery store. But beware, there’s a big chance you’re wasting a lot of it. The average family wastes about 25% of the food they buy.
Moral of the story: make sure you’re really going to finish those 5 boxes of bagel bites before you buy them.
7. Taxes
Taxes are always tricky and are pretty much designed to confuse you. Nevertheless, there are certain loopholes that people who are actually interested in this stuff know about.
So hire a good accountant or tax lawyer who can help find what areas you might be able to lower your taxes in, it will pay for itself and then some.
8. Warranties
When you’re talking about something truly valuable like a new computer or phone, go for it. But most of the time warranties are just another way companies try to stick you for your paper.
Really consider whether you actually need to pay extra for a warranty. If it’s something flimsy you think is going to break easily, maybe you should rethink the purchase altogether.
Take these tips to heart and you’ll definitely realize how much money you’ve been throwing away.
