All workplaces vary when it comes to the dress code. There are some businesses that hold high standards and others that keep them low. The thing that you should remember though is that you are in a business environment and you should dress accordingly. This goes for business casual and formal. There are certain items that are appropriate for evening wear that is not in a business meeting. When you choose what you are going to wear it is telling your associates about you and your company. You need to know what is appropriate and what is not.
The attire you wear should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior VP has to have a different image than a sales assistant. Those in high position in the company must always keep a sharp image where those in a lower position may be able to get away with a polo and khaki’s. Like it or not you will be judge on your appearance. “Dress-down” days will say more about you than any business suit could. For it is on these days when your bosses will look at you the most. So on these days you should put some flare into your attire. Make sure you stand out but not to a point where you look ridiculous. You should avoid jeans, worn, wrinkled shirts, sneakers, scuffed shoes, or anything that may be considered too revealing.
The golden rule in business attire is never to where anything too revealing or leave little to the imagination. People who do will not be taken seriously. People will also think that they cannot figure out what is appropriate for the office. In some work environments, wear too revealing clothing is an excusable reason for termination. You should wear one thing when you are hanging out with your friends and another when you mean business. When you are someone who is trying to get higher in your organization you should dress like you already have that position. There is a saying that says “you should dress like that which you wish to become, that way everyone else thinks your there.” All this means is that if you dress like you are successful then you are successful.
Remember to always ask yourself where you are going. If you are going to see an opera, business lunch, or corporate retreat then dress accordingly. The cloths you wear will make you or break you. When in doubt, dress conservatively. And one more tip you can always remove your jacket but cannot put it on if you leave it home.
