Charges – Arrested

Shann was charged with the premeditated murder of a federal agent. If he is convicted, he could face life in prison, the FBI said in a statement. Authorities said Meehan was in custody and hospitalized Thursday, recovering from the gunshot wounds he sustained during the ambush that resulted in Ferency’s death. Meehan had been unable to comment to investigators, FBI Special Agent Paul Keenan said.

When Ferency, a 30-year veteran police officer, left the building to respond, Meehan allegedly shot him. Then another officer shot Meehan.

“An attack on law enforcement is an attack on all of us,” US Attorney John E. Childress said in a statement. “As citizens of this county, we enjoy the safety and security provided by the men and women of law enforcement on a daily basis. That security and protection is even more valuable because sometimes it is paid with the lives of those who have chosen to protect us. ”

“The selfless dedication exhibited by Detective Ferency throughout his career and his tragic death yesterday is another example of why we all owe our respect and gratitude to members of law enforcement,” added Childress.

Local news and social media reports indicate that Meehan, a father of three, ran for mayor of Terre Haute in 2019 after retiring early from the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute.

In an interview with WabashValley, Meehan said that gun violence in schools was a major threat to American youth. A spokesperson for the Terre Haute Police Department also confirmed that Meehan had previously run in the last mayoral election.

“I think a lot of this has to do with children and what happens at home and everything that happens around them causes a lot of pressure and there are a lot of things happening that shouldn’t be happening,” Meehan, who ran independently, told the local medium. He ultimately finished last in the four-candidate mayoral race, garnering about 1 percent of the vote.

While authorities have not yet detailed why Meehan opened fire on Wednesday, a criminal complaint obtained by The Daily Beast details how he “repeatedly drove in the vicinity” of the building before stopping at the secured parking garage door around 2: 03 pm

“Meehan got out of his truck, moved around his vehicle in readiness, and threw an incendiary device (a Molotov cocktail) at the Terre Haute RA building,” the complaint says, stating that Ferency left the building shortly thereafter.

With a pistol in his right hand, Meehan allegedly shot Ferency, who attempted to return fire. FBI Special Agent Ryan Lindgren rushed out of the building to help, engaged Meehan “in a gunfight” and shot him twice.

“Despite being shot, Meehan got into his truck and fled the Terre Haute RA building,” the complaint says, noting that officials eventually found him at a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Ferency was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Report

Investigators later found a semi-automatic pistol inside Meehan’s truck, which was loaded with a bullet in the breach, the complaint says. “Two additional rounds of .45 caliber ammunition were found in the front seat area of the Ford F-150. Also found inside the Ford F-150 were 3 Molotov cocktails, 2 empty boxes of .45 caliber Hornaday critical duty ammunition, and an additional magazine for firearms. ”

Meehan now faces life in prison. It was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney and his family did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment.

“The tragic events that unfolded today are meaningless,” Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb said in a statement Wednesday. “Our hearts break for Detective Greg Ferency’s family, his loved ones, and those who served with him every day protecting the residents of the Wabash Valley.”
